Oh no… If you make games in Unreal Engine, and want them to work on IOS, Unreal Engine 4.25 or 4.26 will be the last builds you can use.
How did we get here?
As you may have seen in the past few days, Fortnite has been removed from Apple’s app store. This made it so Fortnite mobile will not get any new updates, and you cannot download it. They were removed because they wanted to add a payment method that was through their own servers, not Apple’s. For in app purchases on IOS, you need to do it through Apple no matter what, or Apple will remove your app from their app store. This is because Apple gets a cut of your profits when you use their payments. After Apple removed Fortnite, Fortnite made a video called “Free Fortnite”
Epic games really wants to get past this fee and wants all other developers to not have to pay it as well.
What happened with Unreal Engine?
Apple is going to block Epic Games (who makes Fortnite and Unreal Engine) From the app store. They are also going to stop giving them the sdks for development starting this month. This means that in Unreal Engine, the IOS platform can never be updated because Epic Games will not be allowed the content for it. This means when Apple makes something that Unreal Engine uses now stop working, you cannot use Unreal Engine for IOS. If Apple made a new phone with a new screen size, you could not update it to work with that screen size in Unreal Engine because Epic Games cannot update IOS in Unreal Engine.
In the end, you will be able to package your Unreal Engine game for IOS for now, but it will not get updates and will stop working at some point. You will probably be able to do if for a few more years and work fine, but I don’t know if IOS will be included with Unreal Engine 5 or not.
